Weight Tracking
Monitor your reptiles' growth and health with consistent weight tracking and visual charts to identify trends over time.
Why Track Weight?
Regular weight monitoring is one of the most important health indicators for reptiles. Weight changes can signal:
- Healthy growth - Steady weight gain in juveniles
- Successful feeding - Maintaining or gaining weight
- Health issues - Sudden weight loss or gain
- Seasonal patterns - Brumation, breeding activity
- Pregnancy - Weight gain in gravid females
Recording a Weight Entry
To log a weight measurement:
- Navigate to your reptile's detail page
- Click the Weight tab
- Click Add Weight Entry
- Enter the details:
- Weight - In grams (e.g., "450")
- Date - When you weighed them (defaults to today)
- Notes (optional) - Pre/post-feed, post-shed, etc.
- Click Save
📏 Pro Tip: Consistency
For the most accurate tracking, weigh your reptiles:
- • At the same time of day
- • Before feeding (empty weight)
- • On the same scale
- • At regular intervals (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly)
Understanding the Weight Chart
The weight chart displays your entries over time as a line graph. You can use it to:
- Identify trends - Is your reptile growing steadily?
- Spot anomalies - Sudden drops or spikes
- Track seasonal patterns - Weight changes during brumation
- Monitor health - Consistent loss may indicate illness
The chart requires at least 2 weight entries to display. The more data you have, the more useful the trend visualization becomes.
Weight Statistics
The Weight tab also shows helpful statistics:
- Current Weight - Most recent entry
- Starting Weight - First recorded weight
- Total Change - Difference from start to now
- Average Weight - Mean across all entries
Best Practices
For Juveniles
- Weigh weekly to monitor rapid growth
- Compare against growth charts for your species
- Adjust feeding frequency based on weight trends
For Adults
- Weigh monthly to catch slow changes
- Expect seasonal fluctuations (brumation, breeding)
- Watch for unexplained weight loss
For Breeders
- Track female weight before and after breeding
- Monitor gravid females for pre-lay weight gain
- Weigh males to ensure they're maintaining condition
⚠️ When to Be Concerned
Consult a reptile veterinarian if your reptile:
- • Loses more than 10% body weight in a month
- • Shows no weight gain despite regular feeding
- • Has sudden, unexplained weight loss
- • Stops eating AND starts losing weight
