Care Reminders
Set custom reminders for any husbandry task beyond feeding - from substrate changes to vet appointments to seasonal maintenance.
What Are Care Reminders?
Care reminders are flexible, user-defined tasks that help you stay on top of all aspects of reptile care. Unlike feeding schedules (which are automated), care reminders are for everything else you need to remember.
Creating a Care Reminder
To add a new reminder:
- Click Reminders in the main navigation
- Click the Care Tasks tab
- Click + Add Reminder
- Fill in the details:
- Reptile - Which reptile this reminder is for
- Task - What needs to be done
- Due Date - When should this be completed
- Notes (optional) - Additional instructions or context
- Click Save
Common Reminder Types
Here are some popular uses for care reminders:
Enclosure Maintenance
- Deep clean enclosure
- Change substrate
- Replace UVB bulb (every 6-12 months)
- Check/calibrate thermometer
- Clean water dish
Health & Veterinary
- Annual vet check-up
- Fecal test
- Medication dose (if not daily)
- Weigh reptile
Seasonal Tasks
- Start brumation preparation
- End brumation
- Adjust basking temperatures for season
- Breeding season planning
Record Keeping
- Update photos
- Review feeding schedule effectiveness
- Export data for records
π‘ Pro Tip: Be Specific
Instead of "Clean enclosure," try "Deep clean PVC enclosure: remove all dΓ©cor, sanitize, replace substrate." The more specific your task description, the less you'll have to remember when the reminder comes due.
Viewing Reminders
The Reminders dashboard shows both feeding schedules and care tasks. The Care Tasks tab displays all your custom reminders sorted by due date:
- Overdue - Tasks past their due date (shown in red)
- Upcoming - Tasks due soon
- Future - Tasks scheduled for later
Completing a Reminder
When you complete a task:
- Find the reminder on the Care Tasks page
- Click Mark as Complete
- Optionally add completion notes
Completed reminders are removed from the active list. If it's a recurring task, create a new reminder for the next occurrence.
π Creating Recurring Reminders
For tasks that repeat regularly (like monthly substrate changes), set the due date for the next occurrence when you complete the current one. This keeps your reminder system accurate without cluttering it with future dates too far out.
Editing and Deleting Reminders
To update or remove a reminder:
- Edit - Click the edit icon to change the task, due date, or notes
- Delete - Click the delete icon if the task is no longer needed
Tips for Effective Reminders
1. Don't Overdo It
Only create reminders for tasks you might actually forget. Daily tasks you always do anyway don't need reminders.
2. Use Realistic Due Dates
Set due dates you can actually meet. If a task is flexible ("sometime this month"), pick a date mid-month rather than the first.
3. Batch Similar Tasks
If you're going to deep clean one enclosure, create reminders for all enclosures on the same day to batch the work.
4. Add Context in Notes
Include relevant information like "Last changed on [date]" or "Use 1:10 bleach solution" so you have all the info you need when the reminder comes due.
Combining with Other Features
Care reminders work great alongside:
- Feeding Schedules - For automated meal reminders
- Health Records - Reference past health notes when creating vet appointment reminders
- Enclosures - Track enclosure maintenance schedules
